FAQ

Common questions

What counts as an event?

Every event your projects receive: autocaptured page views, clicks and scrolls, and every custom event you track. Each one is counted once by its ID, so a retried send is never billed twice. All the projects in an organization share one allowance.

What happens past 100,000 events without a plan?

Nothing breaks. Pug never drops, throttles or delays an event for going over: the dashboard shows a banner, and an admin can subscribe to Pay as you go from Settings > Billing.

How does tiered pricing work?

Each tier bills only the events inside it. At 3 million events a month, the first 100k are free, the next 1.9 million are billed at the 100k to 2M rate, and the last million at the 2M to 15M rate. Reaching a new tier never reprices the events below it.

Is there a monthly fee?

Pay as you go has a $1.00 base fee each month, charged even in a quiet month, plus usage. Under the free allowance you need no plan, so there is no fee and no card.

When does the free allowance reset?

Every month, on the day your organization was created. Once you subscribe, it runs on your billing period instead.

Who bills me?

Dodo Payments, our merchant of record. It runs checkout, charges in US dollars, issues invoices and receipts, and handles sales tax or VAT for your country. Pug never sees your card number.

Can I change or cancel my plan?

Yes, at any time. An admin opens the billing portal from Settings > Billing to change or cancel the plan, update the card, or download invoices. When a subscription ends, the organization goes back to the free allowance and keeps every event.

What if a payment fails?

Nothing changes right away: your plan and free allowance stay as they are, and the dashboard asks an admin to update the payment method in the billing portal.

Do seats or projects cost extra?

No. Pug is priced by events alone: invite your whole team and create as many projects as you need.

Does bot traffic count?

Browsers driven by automation (Playwright, Puppeteer, Selenium, headless Chrome) are stopped in the Web SDK before they send anything, so they cost nothing. Crawler and data-center traffic that does reach Pug is tagged as bot traffic rather than dropped, so it is counted.

Does SSO cost extra?

No. SSO is on every plan, cloud and self-hosted: there is no SSO tax. Sign in with Google Workspace, or connect Okta, Microsoft Entra ID, Keycloak or any other OIDC provider, then verify your domain to add your team automatically and require SSO for it. SAML and SCIM are not supported.

Do you offer custom terms?

Yes. For very high volume, longer history or an annual contract, we set up a plan with its own rates and allowance. Email hello@pug.sh.

Is self-hosting really free?

Yes. The whole stack (Postgres, ClickHouse, NATS and one Go binary) is open source under AGPL-3.0 and free to run on your own infrastructure, with no event limits and no license fee. Network-served modifications must be shared under the same license.
